The objective of the SafeSpindle project, jointly carried out by AMAC Chemnitz, Fraunhofer IIS/EAS Dresden and the Swiss partners StepTec AG Luterbach, Telma AG Seftigen and Mikron Agie Charmilles Nidau, was to develop an innovative modular condition monitoring system (CMS) for spindles with the option of integrating additional monitoring tasks for the entire machine tool. A cloud connection was provided for long-term analysis and data storage. As a result, a condition monitoring system with an open and flexible architecture and distributed system intelligence was developed that meets the requirements of Industry 4.0 and the increasingly important Internet of Things.
AMAC’s tasks in the joint project mainly consisted of the development of the system concept and of the microsystem-based intelligent sensor module (ISM) with an ASIC as a core component as well as in cooperation with the project partners of the development and implementation of the other local condition monitoring components, i.e. a spindle diagnostic module (SDM) and a condition monitoring module (Advanced module) for the entire machine tool.
The ISM developed by AMAC with its integrated three-axis vibration sensor system is one of the main components of the CMS. Activities in this work package were divided into three complexes:

  • Development of micromechanical sensor elements
  • Development and preparation of the signal processing ASIC as a core component of the ISM
  • Integration of the individual components to the intelligent sensor module by means of a tailored assembly and connection technology (AVT).

In evaluating the performed tests, it was found that the developed sensor ASICs as well as the ISM mounted with them meet the defined requirements. On this basis, the ISM can successfully complement the AMAC vibration sensor product line in the subsequent industrialization phase.
